Elk Hunting, Guided Hunts

Big Timber Outfitters is your premiere choice for bow hunting trophy archery elk. Our hunts last 8 days, with 1 day in, 1 day out, and 6 days in the field. Archery tags are available over the counter on a first come, first serve basis, and we are very fortunate to be assigned Idaho hunting Unit 29. Our exclusive area covers approximately 300 square miles and boasts some of Idaho's finest trophy bulls. Plus, Idaho Fish and Game has limited the number of rifle hunts in our area by designating the area as controlled hunt only, making it a prime trophy location! A recent survey found over 23,000 head of elk within 100 miles of Salmon. This survey included our area as well. Because our hunts are a true wildlife experience, and because of how we and the Idaho Fish and Game department manage the herd, you can expect to see mature 5 and 6-point bulls, as well as the opportunity to see bulls in the 300 to 400 class!

Take the Trails to Archery Elk

Upon arrival at the trailhead, you enjoy a 2 to 3-hour scenic horseback ride to camp along Big Timber Creek, into the heart of big elk habitat. Our camps are furnished with comfortable, carpeted tents and wood stoves, and come with delicious home-cooked meals, gentle mountain horses, and friendly, professional guides for your ultimate elk hunting experience. From camp, you and your guide easily access game trails, wallows, or blinds, or you may prefer to stalk the many ridges, creeks, and hundreds of small hidden meadows in search of your backcountry trophy.

Once you head out in search of archery elk, you can traverse 300 square miles of hunting terrain. This terrain consists of high mountain meadows and wallows. Pre-scouting is always done before you arrive in order to locate the elk for our hunters, and archery elk hunting trips are available on a one-on-one guide/hunter ratio to help you come home with the prize. Although we don’t guarantee you will harvest an animal, we do guarantee that you will be in the middle of elk country. We have a lot of archery elk and some Trophy Bulls!

Elk Hunting Fees

All archery elk hunters must fill out and send us an Idaho Affidavit Bow Hunters Form. This form is accessible at the Idaho Fish and Game Website

Archery Elk Hunt: $3,800.00 plus 6% sales tax, 3% Federal tax, + License and Tags
License: $154.75
Tag: $416.75
Archery Stamp: $20.00
Crossbow: $1.75 (Must Have Handicap Affidavit Form at Time of Purchase)

15% Kill Rate with 31% 6-Point Bulls or Better

Rifle Elk:
50% Kill Rate with 20% 6-Point Bulls or Better

Rifle Elk

We are blessed with a controlled unit that has produced trophy bulls in the high 300 classes. In the 2009 hunting season, the Fish and Game had only 263 tags for approximately 2.9 million acres. You must purchase an Idaho hunting license to apply for the draw. The controlled hunt processing fee is $6.25, but do not put in for the unit. We would advise that you contact us to help you apply for these tags. We recommend letting us help you with the paperwork. If you do not draw, there are other options available so please contact us so we can discuss them with you..

Cow Hunt

Our cow hunt is draw only. In 2009 the Fish and Game only allowed 180 tags for approximately 2.9 million acres. If you would like to go on an exciting cow hunt and test your skills against a wise and tricky female, then we can assist you in the draw. This is a November hunt.
